Salter Housewares got its start in Bilston, England, in the late 1760s. Richard Salter invented a small scale he named a "pocket steelyard," which is much like today's fisherman scale.
Eventually, Richard's nephew took over and named the company George Salter & Co. He also constructed a manufacturing site where scales of all shapes and sizes were produced, including the United Kingdom's very first bathroom scale. Over time, Salter & Co. began manufacturing other items as well, such as potato chippers, coin-operated machines and irons.
By 1950, more than 2,000 people were employed by George Salter & Co. Roughly 20 years later, the company was bought by Staveley Industries and was broken up into various subsidiaries. Over time and many acquisitions later, Salter was folded into Weigh-Tronix Corporation. Because the industrial and commercial focus of the business did not suit Salter Housewares' original focus, the management team decided to buy out the store from Weigh-Tronix and revert its business model to again serve consumers.
After a quick growth period, Salter Housewares was acquired by U.S.-based HoMedics. With distribution throughout the U.S., U.K. and Canada, Salter Housewares still weighs in at No. 1 on sales for bathroom scales in the U.K.
